On such a warm and sunny day, a different day needs to be
contemplated…….
Oh February in Chicago can be a weather wonder. I hate
winter, but love when February shows up because it means that the snow does not
stick around much longer.
February 6, 2011 is a day I will never forget. Two days before my Former Farmer flew
to Dallas to watch his beloved team, the Green Bay Packers play in the Super
Bowl. Under normal circumstances
going the Super Bowl is out of our league, but a customer invited him and he jumped
at the chance. Plus, the company
had a suite to watch the game. He
was in Packer Heaven – literally.
Dallas also gave him a nice reprieve from the snow Armageddon we faced a
few days before. The city was still recovering from more than 10 inches and
schools remained closed.
On that cold Sunday February morning, the kids were dressed
for church and buckled into their car seats. My surprise came when I opened the garage door and found an
additional three inches of snow.
Solution? I threw the SUV
into reverse and gunned it.
Although we made it out, I packed two large tire tracks into the snow.
The snow removal job required the use of the dreaded snow
blower. The machine and I have a
checkered past. On my watch the
newspaper has been shredded to create homemade confetti. I have been known to decorate windows
with the snow shoot and do we do not discuss the gas and oil mixture fiasco–
way to rich and I don’t mean money.
I usually bow to Former Farmer to clean the drive.
Knowing my track record and fear of leaving 3 young kids
alone inside required all the brainpower I had left. The cerebral quota had been met for the day.
After church we drove home and expected to see a pristinely
white driveway with two permanent tire ruts. Instead our driveway and sidewalk were cleaned to
perfection. WOW!!!!! I almost thought my contacts needed a
good cleaning because this could not be reality.
I have wonderful neighbors but they are older, except for
the couple across the street. I
quickly unloaded the kids and went to say thank you to the young couple. Instead they said they were shocked to
wake up and find their driveway and sidewalk cleaned. A snow fairy was on the loose doing good deeds at the
perfect time. A snow fair in
August just does not have the same effect as February.
A few hours later, I saw a gentleman with an industrial
looking snow blower strolling along the sidewalk. Without a jacket, I quickly ran outside and asked if he was
the neighborhood snow fairy. His said
that he purchased this massive snow blower and never gets to use it on his tiny
driveway. He decided he finally had the perfect time to share his wealth.
I will never forget the man’s generosity. We haven’t seen
him or his snow blower since that day, but his kindness has never been
forgotten.
At that night’s Super Bowl Party my friends were asking how
I was getting on being alone with the latest snow fall. I had a wonderful story to tell. Oh yea, the dreaded (Bears fan) Packers
won. Driveway, husband and home
were happy.
Later that night I cracked open the snow blower owner’s
manual.
