MOPS and Me
In all my years of working no boss was more demanding than a
child. I don’t mean a boss who acts like a child, we’ve all had plenty of
those, but a little life that grew inside of me.
I made the difficult choice to be a stay-at-home mom. The
decision had consequences and one thing is for certain, it is one tough
job. Most days are great; other
days are ones I care to forget. My
motto is “everyone clean, feed and no one dead.” No ER visits count as a bonus day. Like all working stiffs,
we need a short respite. For some
it is a weekend away or a time out.
For me, 90 minutes at MOPS is the perfect respite from motherhood. MOPS is the acronym for Mothers of
Preschools and is open to any mom whose youngest child is a few weeks old
through 5 years of age.
MOPS started in Colorado in February of 1973 with the goal
of connecting mothers. They ate, shared stories, tried a craft and passed the
basket for childcare. Today,
not much has changed. See what MOPS can offer you:
1. Chance
to meet other women. Some meetings
are during the day while other chapters accommodate working mothers. One thing is for certain you will meet
other moms who are going through the same struggles as you. MOPS gives its members the chance to
learn from an expert. Groups host
speakers on several subjects that are relevant to moms of young children.
2. You complete a craft. Each meeting has time dedicated to a new craft for any
skill level. Do you make Martha
Stewart cringe or make her sigh with envy? Then MOPS is for you.
Each meeting has time dedicated to crafts for every skill level. I have used past MOPS crafts to
decorate the house.
3. Breakfast. MOPS believes better moms make a better
world. You cannot take on the world with an empty stomach. Meetings include a homemade
meal.
4. Loving childcare workers. Some MOPS
groups pay their childcare providers, while others volunteer their time. Rest
assured that the kids are in good hands.
In the beginning it is tough handing over your children and take time
for yourself but it does get easier. This is a great step for preschool
readiness.
5. The
MOPS Steering/Leadership Team allows you to keep a pilot light on your
career. On the Steering/Leadership
Team you have the opportunity to lead, engage in publicity, strengthen your
financial knowledge and be part of a team.
Wherever you attend MOPS, know
that each group is unique, like each mom.
I encourage moms with little ones to check out their local chapter. If the first group does not jive with your
expectations keeping looking. Finding the right MOPS group, might be like
trying on shoes. You will
eventually find a group that suits your style.
September is the time when MOPS throws open the doors for
returning and new members. The
MOPS International website can found here: mops.org, follow the link to find a
local chapter.
