Attention: Panera and Chipotle You Got It Wrong.
Did big business think they could pull a fast one on consumers? Really, do we look that dumb? Starting with Panera that has this television ad "At Panera, we decided a long time ago to avoid the easy road and switch to antibiotic-free chicken". In Crazyville, the bus below has been seen in town bragging their chicken is antibiotic-free.
Listen up Panera ALL chicken is antibiotic-free because it is a federal law. Don't believe me, check out the label on the Perdue chicken below. In very small print it says "Federal law prohibits the use of antibiotics in poultry." Panera you are advertising a federal law for us. Thanks for looking out for the consumer and your bottom line. Want another news alert? All chicken and turkey parts are antibiotic-free. Just check the label on the meats or read the law here. The store brand will not stay this but any brand toting their meat is antibiotic-free has the disclaimer on the bottom. Now you are informed. My mother finger is shaking at you, Panera.
Chipotle takes this issue to another level. They actually created a short video showing themselves as a simple scarecrow that had an epiphany after watching how farmers treat their animals. Makes a great horror movie but does not depict real life on a farm. The video shows chickens stuck with needles that instantly doubles their size. The cow are stacked in tiny cages with sad faces. Truth here, there are no growth hormones injected into chickens. Again, check the label or read the federal law.
I was on a recent farm tour, a "dreaded CAFO" beef steer farm. This "dreaded CAFO" was mighty nice in my book. The cows had access to plenty of fresh water, freshly mixed feed and enough room to move around and lay down. The farm had over 1000 head of steer with plenty of room for all the cattle. The animals were not laying in waste or complaining for a want. Better than some wild animals. The farmer explained by having them in the shed, with all 4 sides open, it protects them from the elements and wild animals that roam the area. Cattle are a slow moving, docile animals and one wolf or coyote can decimate a herd in a matter of minutes The shed, not a cage, is there for their protection for several reasons. Chipotle, you got this one wrong. Your scarecrow was trying to scare uninformed consumers instead of advertising the truth.
Chipotle, in my town, you and your scarecrow need a time out for unethical advertising. I wonder how long it will take the FTC to start cracking down on misleading advertising. Guess Panera and Chipotle need to call their lawyers, just in case.
I have been working on this post for some time now. Funny thing happened today. I went into Panera looking for printed material or signs that advertise their chicken story. Guess what? There was nothing to be found. Guess that bus sign, YouTube video and tv ads are the only remnants of the antibiotic-free chicken ad campaign.
