Halloween in Crazyville - Princesses Live Near Gore. (Spin Cycle)
Halloween is a few days away. Around here the holiday is broken down into two categories
gore or cute. Since my kids are
young we lean towards cute. The girls twirl around in their princess dresses
and Revin’ Roger pretends he is friendly monster. They are excited to dress up in
something different and show it off to the neighbors. The candy is a bonus for everyone. The kids have no concept
that Halloween deals with any form of the dead – zombie or mummy. In their world all dogs and people go
to heaven.
On the flipside the neighborhood teenagers and their parents
see the holiday as a chance to show off what rattles in the night. One address owns a prop house so their
yard is filled with professional and homemade dummies. It takes the owner an
entire weekend to set up a mock graveyard with motion lights and flying objects. Under a tree is the ugliest witch I
have ever seen. On Halloween night
the wife sits in the chair of the witch and scares off every kid. The repeat visitors taunt
her and she gets them every time.
At the end of the block, teenage boys setup a mock cemetery
with blood and images of torture. Nothing
like walking on a cool night to see a rat eating a hand while the attached body
is stretched on a board. This cemetery
also has headstones with bones climbing out of the ground. This looks funny in the daylight but
disturbing in the moonlight.
In my opinion, Halloween straddles two worlds. For kids it is a chance to pretend to
be someone else. While adults see the holiday as an opportunity to showcase the fears that keep us up at night. Halloween can be viewed the same way candy is given out that night. The early trick-or-treaters are cute and excited to get the candy. Later in the night we are a bit scared to answer the door not knowing who is on the other side. In the end, it is all in good fun. Princesses and gore.
How do you celebrate Halloween?
