Puppy Licks or Kitty Scratches?
This week's Spin Cycle writing prompt involves family pets. Are you a dog, cat, fish or other small animal lover?
Growing up I always had a fun loving dog at home. When my parents were dealing with infertility, they had a German Sheppard named Princess. After she left this earth along came a purebred Dalmatian called Samantha. Samantha was not the brightest dog in town. She use to bark at empty garbage cans but her best feature was plowing down my younger sister as we walked into the yard. Samantha's ears would perk up as she heard the clank of the metal gate and ran full speed into Michelle. Michelle, only being eight or nine, would fall to the ground and cover her head as Samantha ran over her and circled back several times. The dog was in puppy heaven because her buddy was home. After Samantha, along came Ariel a beautiful black Hinz 57 breed. She was named after my youngest sister's favorite movie at the time. Then came Kedzie who still lives with my parents.
Kedzie joined us after we could no longer bear the loss of Ariel. Michelle went to the Chicago Anti-Cruelty Society and called mom in a panic saying she found us the perfect dog. Kedzie had been at the shelter for a few days and was small and skinny - still is today. Since she, like all our dogs, came from a shelter her history was short on details. All we knew was she spent some time on the streets.

Whatever her lineage and history, she is deeply loved.
Our family dogs have always been an crucial part of the family. They were not substitute children or simply play toys. Growing up dad said their job was security and only payment was food. Actually, they did more than just taunt the backyard squirrel and scare away potential burglars. The dogs provided companionship, an excuse to take a walk and a friendly face at the door. There is no greater feeling after a long day to open the door to see a puppy filled with pure joy because YOU came home.
Are you a small pet lover? If so, which kind? Join the Spin Cycle and share your story.
