Calls From Heaven
I just read Mitch Albom's "The First Phone Call From Heaven." The title gave away the main story line so there is no plot spoiling here. In a small town eight people received calls from deceased relatives. As you can imagine once word got out, the world wanted to hear what callers had to say to their loved ones. The books circles around the individuals who got call and the phones that remained silent.
As I read, I wondered if this was possible, would someone call me from heaven? Who? Would the person I want to call dial me or someone else? I asked Bryan who he wanted to call and he said his grandmother. Never said which one, but I knew he would love to have more time with his paternal grandmother. Bryan has several fond memories of hanging out in her kitchen. She was such a good cook, my mother-in-law told her new husband to visit his mother if he missed her cooking that much.
For me, there is someone I would love to hear from again. For a few days I could not figure out why I wanted to only hear her voice. She was a strong woman who faced many hurdles head-on. Her love for family was paramount in her life. She opened her home to traveling family members and even mortgaged her beloved home so her siblings could start a new life in America. When I was in college, she invited me over for Thursday lunch. Nothing special, a microwaved hot dog, but it was the highlight of my week. We talked about the past, newest Irish pubs and my sister's love lives or lack of love lives. There was a significant age difference, but it did not matter. She disagreed with the local priest and supported Kathy and Judy on WGN. Heaven help us.
Upon further reflection, I finally figured it out. I could no longer hear her voice.
Other deceased relatives I could hear or imagine what they would say or do. I can still see the look on my maternal grandmother's face and hear her voice over something she found hard to believe. "Oh, Sharon."
Yet, for almost 10 years she has been gone and her voice is now silent in my brain. I think that is the hardest thought to accept.
I finished the book and thought maybe it would be nice. Then of course, one day my time will come and hopefully I will travel north to heaven. Then, I will get to see and hear from everyone. Until then, I still have lots of work to get done on earth. My "to do list" grew - again.
Would you like a call from heaven? If so who?
